Ayurvedic Herb “Triphala” for Gut Health

Triphala is beneficial for digestion and elimination. It acts as a laxative and Triphala is a blend of three herbs. It's famous for its anti-aging effects since ages. In the ancient texts of Ayurveda, It is included under the category 'Rasayana' which means Rejuvenation. 

Triphala is a combination of Chebulic myrobalan fruit (called as hareethaki in sanskrit), Beleric myrobalan (called as Vibhitaki in sanskrit) and Indian goose berry (called as amla in sanskrit) . 

Benefits of taking Triphala?

Triphala balances all the three doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. In addition, it has rejuvenative properties and good for eyes. It is a very good anti-oxidant and cures almost all digestive disorders. There are very few herbs in Ayurveda which include all five different tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent). Triphala is one among them. As a digestive tonic, stabilizes blood sugar and provides a source of antioxidants and vitamin C. It also supports regular bowel movements. 

Ayurveda considers Agni or digestive fire when impaired causes almost all diseases. It suggest that on taking  Triphala, sluggish digestion and buildup of ama (toxins) can be cured, triphala is said to kindle the digestive fire (deepana) and help improve digestion (pachana), allowing one to get the most nutrition from one’s dietary intake.

Triphala can be consumed in so many ways. The powder available readily in the market can be taken every day with honey, capsules are also available. Even decoction can be prepared out of Triphala powder and can be consumed. 

But it's always good to go for a cup of Triphala tea daily, so that your digestion and assimilation becomes proper and you say good bye to those anti-aging signs on your body. 

Triphala Tea preparation -

Triphala tea is easy to make, but it takes a little bit of planning. Simply add one half-teaspoon of triphala tea powder to a glass, pour in boiling water, cover, and allow too steep for several hours. The steeping time blends together all the flavors of the three triphala fruits, creating a more harmonious flavor. Hot water can be added to cold tea to warm it up.

What can a cup of Triphala tea do to your body?

Having a cup of Triphala tea either in morning or at bedtime can do wonders. 

  1. It can reestablish and stabilize your gut flora (micro biome)

  2. Burns unwanted fat

  3. Cleansing effect and releases toxins

  4. Gentle laxative and prevents constipation

  5. Stabilize blood sugar levels

Though you feel unpleasant initially by the bitter astringent taste, try for yourself and see the wonders it can do to your body. Your system becomes more balanced and all the three doshas will be in equilibrium. If not possible to take on a daily basis, take once in a week at least.
