Tips for preventing dry skin and scalp in Cold season

Cold season is here and the major problem faced during this period is the dry skin and scalp. Here are few simple Ayurvedic tips to tackle this concern.


The dryness of the skin and scalp is due to the predominance of Vata dosha. When Vata dosha increases in the body it reduces Kapha and makes skin dry and wrinkled. Dry scalp can lead to dandruff as well. Other clinical features of dry skin and scalp include - itching, cracking of the skin, and burning sensation


Home remedies for dry skin -

1. Include ghee in diet daily.

Other wholesome diet habits include the intake of - food predominant in bitter and astringent taste, red rice, Green gram, warm water, and other easily digestible food.


Food rich in Vitamin E and Omega 3 fatty acids helps to keep the scalp in good health. This includes - drumstick, mangoes, pomegranate, Sunflower seed, almond, pine nuts, peanuts, spinach, taro root, flaxseed oil, soybean, pistachio.

Broccoli, carrots, chard, mustard and turnip greens, nuts, papaya, pumpkin, red peppers Flax seeds, walnut, sardines, salmon, soybean, tofu, shrimp, brussel sprout, cauliflower, winter squash, fish oil, egg oil, krill oil, chia seeds, Canola oil, camelia, and coconut.


2. External application of oil - Abhyanga is highly recommended.
In case of the dry scalp - head massage or Shiro Abhyanga is advised


3. Fenugreek powder and besan flour mixed with yogurt for external application in the skin before bath prevent dryness. Fenugreek powder and yogurt alone can be applied to the scalp as well.


4. Keep your skin moisturized from the inside by drinking at least eight glasses of water a day and eating plenty of sweet, juicy fruits.


5. A face mask of honey, egg, olive oil, and rose water works very well for dry skin.
