Facial steaming is a great option for those who have acne, as it promotes the skins natural processes and cleanses your skin, without the need for harsh chemicals.

Thermoregulation dilates the blood vessels and improves the circulation. When there is a better blood flow, the oxygen and nutrient supply to face region also increases, thereby providing a glowing skin naturally.

This also reduces anxiety and stress levels and results in a good sleep pattern. And proper sleep is one among the beauty regime if you know. If one gets proper sleep, the skin would be naturally nourished and will be devoid of problems like under eye circles or blemishes.

In addition to the beauty benefits described above, facial steam also opens the blocked sinuses, thereby helping to soothe the symptoms of a nose block. It even cures headaches.

How to do Facial steam in a simple and effective way?

The Sanskrit term Swedana means perspire. There are 13 types of swedana (sudation) mentioned in the classics. Facial steam is indicated as a part of other procedures in Ayurveda. For example when Nasya (Nasal instillation), one among Panchakarma (Five detoxification) procedures in mentioned, Pada sweda , or hot fomentation with towel is mentioned. Here pada means cloth.

Now coming to details on how to do facial steam, the ayurvedic way.

Boil water in a pot with a handful of herbs as per your dosha constitution. Now, grab a fluffy towel to cover yourself well and sit in a comfortable position. Remember to keep your hair tied high and off your face. Drape the towel over head and sit near the pot with boiling water, maintaining a gap of 4-6 inches. As the heat of water decreases, you can adequately adjust the distance. Sit for 5-10 minutes. Practice this at least once a week for flawless beautiful skin.

Properties of Vata Skin

  • Thin and with minute pores
  • Cold and dry
  • Rough and can experience flaky patches
  • They are likely to suffer from dry eczema with flaky grey patches

Herbs for Vata Face steam – 

Dried Bay leaf – It helps in drawing impurities from the skin

Licorice – It is soothing and anti-inflammatory

Powder all the ingredients and keep in an air tight container. You can take a tablespoon full and add in your water to steam.

Also, you can use 4-6 drops of essential oil in your water. Vata person can use rose, lavender or sweet orange essential oil.

Properties of Pitta Skin

  • Oily and light skin
  • Intense and hot
  • easily prone to acne, white heads and black heads
  • easily affected by rashes and redness

Herbs for Pitta steam – 

Dried Bay leaf




crushed fennel seeds

Powder all the ingredients and keep in an airtight jar. You can use a tablespoon with water to steam.

Rose, Geranium and lavender essential oil can be used (4-6 drops) along with water to steam.

Properties of Kapha skin

  • Thick, pale and moist
  • Cold and soft in touch
  • Oily and can easily be greasy

Herbs for Kapha steam 

Bay leaf dried

Licorice root powder

Dried lemon peel

Handful of rosemary

half a handful lemon balm

Mix them together and keep in an airtight jar. Use as and when required with water to steam. You can add 4-6 drops of essential oil of Juniper, lime or eucalyptus.
