Skin is body’s largest organ and it acts more like a sponge because whatever we aplpy externally penetrate inside. You should therefore be aware of what you are exposing to.
First let’s check about the Ayurvedic perspective of Skin.
According to Ayurveda Skin is the sub tissue (upadhathu) of blood. It acts like a mirror that reflects the qualities of blood.
Ayurveda also mentions about the qualities of a person with an ideal healthy skin which is mentioned as Twak Sara Purusha. The features of a person with ideal skin are –
- Soft, oily, thin, smooth and lustrous skin
- Balck, deep rooted hair
- Good eye sight
- Enjoys a healthy, long life.
It’s also important to know your skin type for a holistic approach to your skin.
|Thin and delicate||Sensitive||Thick, pale and soft|
|Cool on touch||Warm and soft on touch||More tolerant to heat and sun|
|Easily gets dehydrated||More prone to freckles and moles||Ages slower and less wrinkles compared to other 2 skin types|
|Ages faster||Less tolerance to hot climate||Moist and lusterous|
What happens when any of this dosha gets out of balance?
When Vata goes out of balance Skin may age faster, goes rough and flaky, and can result in chapped skin and lips. When Pitta goes out of balance, rashes, rosacea, acne and skin spots can appear. Also, earlier wrinkles and greying of hair can also happen. When Kapha goes out of balance, you may experience dull complexion, more pores, black heads, pimples and eczema.
Now let’s come to the concept of Organic or Natural skin care. What is meant by organic/Natural?
Though the words Organic and natural are used synonymously, they are not the same. First let us check what organic means? Organic means produced or involving production without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial agents. When it comes to food products, organic products are regulated by the National Organic Program (NOP) which is run by the USDA. But when it comes to beauty products or skin care products the term organic is not regulated and the companies can use them pretty freely. Natural does not mean organic, it means existing in or caused by nature; not made or caused by humankind.
But the real question is is it important to have organic or all natural products for your skin and hair?
We get exposed to almost 168 hazardous chemicals each day. Chemicals such as phthalates, mineral oils, sodium lauryl sulphate, propylene glycol, and parabens, are all commonly used in cosmetics and body care products and are known carcinogens or toxins that affect the immune, reproductive, and endocrine systems. And remember your skin is like sponge and it absorbs almost anything which is in contact with it.
Even Ayurveda opines the same about skin. In the context of Abhyanga – Ayurvedic Oil massage it says one who massage his body with oil daily will not be aged easily, and the skin will be lustrous and gets benefits like nourishment to eyes and hair. Also, it provides good sleep. So, the oil we apply externally to the skin ensures all these benefits. Likewise, the chemicals we apply externally must definitely have its ill effects, right?
When you use organic skin care products it is more effective simply because they are made with ingredients that don’t disrupt your body’s natural state. Since what you put on your skin will end up in your body, treat your body well and you will feel and look your best.
Our bodies use nutrients absorbed not only through food, but also through the skin. It is medically understood that what goes on your skin absorbs into your bloodstream and is carried through your body. Why is it that we are far more scrutinizing about what we put in our body than what we put on it? We prefer organic food products, and know it’s benefits. But when it comes to skin care products or cosmetics the same trend is not seen.
