Weight loss is an issue on nearly everyone’s mind at one time or another. Everyone wants to be slim and toned. Before resorting to liposuction or medications however, try these Ayurvedic weight loss home remedies. Rekindle your metabolic fire and life naturally. Watch your weight and stay in shape easily with Ayurveda.

So what is the Ayurvedic weight loss plan? Ayurvedists like to consult the ancient texts and scholarly books of the predecessors as a reference. The Bhaishajya Ratnavali, a Bengali materia medica for Ayurveda written in 1883, has this to say about weight loss.

Persons indulging in physical exercise, worry, long walk, intake of honey, remaining awake at night, taking barley as food gets rid of obesity.

Though the book mentions keeping awake at night, the Vata vridhi (Vata imbalance) that occurs due to this may cause other problems. So the best way to reduce weight and remain healthy is a proper diet and exercise.

Let’s look at the Ayurvedic recommendations and home remedies recommended today.

1. Exercise For Weight Loss

Exercise is an antidote for almost everything that ails us. At a minimum, take time everyday to get out and walk.

2. Ayurvedic Weight Loss Diet Plan

  • Eat foods that are in season

  • Eat your largest meal at midday

  • Eat a smaller breakfast and even smaller dinner

  • Include Ayurvedic super foods like ghee, raw honey, almonds and dates in your diet

  • Evening meals should be vegetarian, hot, light and soupy

  • Include non-cream soups, barley, green gram, brown rice, wheat cooked in water and vegetables that have been steamed, roasted or sauteed with extra virgin olive oil

  • The reason for eating the largest meal during midday is that the digestive fire will be stronger during pitta pradhana kala, the pitta dominated time of day that happens between approximately 10am and 2pm. Also, warm foods are more easy to digest and assimilate.

  • If you have the habit of eating deserts at night, try cooked fruits

  • Avoid cheese, yogurt, rich desserts, red meat, leftovers of any kind, cold foods and processed foods.

  • It is also important to reduce evening consumption of fish, fowl and starches

3. Ayurvedic Weight Loss Meal Plan

A typical day’s meal should look like this.

Breakfast

Breakfast should be easy to digest foods like hot oatmeal, hot cereal or fresh fruit. Don’t eat egg yolks since they are hard to digest. Have egg whites instead.

Lunch

Lunch can include cheese, eggs, meat and desserts. As mentioned earlier the powerful digestive fire will digest and assimilate everything around noon.

Dinner

Digestive fire is weakest during dinner so go for light foods like soups or cooked veggies. It is important to know that undigested food gets converted into toxins and gets stored in fat cells. So keep dinner light. Don’t overeat.

4. Ayurvedic Weight Loss Home Remedies

Try these Ayurvedic weight loss home remedies to assist the process of losing weight.

Hot Water

By sipping hot water through out the day you help cleanse the digestive tract and entire body of blockages and impurities. Hot water improves digestion and assimilation of food and helps prevent the body from becoming toxic and clogged. It is also a great aid in reducing food cravings in between meals.

Boil water for 10 minutes, store in a thermos and sip throughout the day. Instead of plain hot water there is an Ayurvedic water which you can sip throughout the day.

Medicated Water

Boil 4 to 5 cups of water in the morning and add 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp whole coriander seeds and 1/2 tsp whole fennel seeds. Strain out the seeds and pour the liquid into a thermos. Sip throughout the day. Cumin, coriander and fennel seed tea helps balance the doshas.

Triphala

This magic Ayurvedic formula can be used internally as well as externally for weight loss. Internally Triphala powder can be consumed with warm water or honey. It’s made of three fruits that have certain properties which help with weight loss.

Amalaki (Gooseberry) works as a natural antioxidant and removes excess inflammation from the body. It also helps to increase the lean body mass and maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Harithaki (Chebulic fruit) supports the body’s natural cleansing process by gently removing toxins that accumulate in the colon. Bibhitaki (Belleric myrobalan) is particularly effective in reducing the accumulation of fat and fluids in the body.

Externally Triphala powder massage known as udwarthanam can be done. Concentrate more on your arms, legs and abdomen.

Six Taste Curry Powder

Ayurveda advises the intake of shad rasas or six tastes. Here’s a simple curry powder that includes all six tastes. Add this to your diet.
